Teaching ESL to Children

Along with the rewards a teacher of ESL experiences, there are just as many challenges. Patience is required as children learning the English language have no attention span at all. It would also help if the teacher enjoyed playing and liked having fun. In this article, we will be covering some very useful tips to aid any teacher in their adventure of teaching ESL to children.

1. Try to involve the children in as many hands on activities as possible. Most children are like sponges when they are young and by giving them the concepts and ideas in such a way as to include being physical, then they will absorb the ESL lesson all that much quicker. Dance, sing songs, get them moving playing games. Anything to get active.

ESL Activities Uncovered!

ESL activities are a crucial part of any ESL lesson plan. If you are not including activities within your class or tutorage, then you are missing out on one of the strongest tools at your disposal. Contained in this article are some of the best activities and a resource of where to find more.

In the average ESL classroom, there is, or should be, an actual methodology to the way the lessons are taught. It is not the same as it is over in North American classrooms where you are drilled then study then tested. You have to make the learning FUN when you are teaching ESL. How can learning in a classroom be FUN??? Well, come with me and I will show you.

ESL teaching jobs are a dime a dozen but there are 3 very important questions you should be asking yourself before and while you are performing your search for the perfect ESL job.  What you will learn here are those exact questions. Let us read on and explore these questions and the reasons why I recommend that you ask them.

1.    Is the position in the country you would like to visit?

The Sticker System

This is a system of keeping track and rewarding students. Sometimes students think of learning English as a joke, no matter how much the parents are paying for the lessons. So this system has been implemented in ALL my classes to try to get their attention and keep it for the 30 minutes to an hour of the class time.

The Basic Concept:

I made up a board using everyday construction paper. On the board was the name of each student on the left of the board. I then drew lines across the paper so each student had their own row.

ESL Games - Slap ‘N’ Say

This is one of my all time favorites. It lends itself easily to the TPR method of teaching ESL and to ANY age group. Can also be played with as few as 2 or 3 people but is a lot more fun with a full class room.

This game can be used as a form of reinforcing vocabulary, phrase(s), or any other lesson just taught.

For ease of explaining, lets say that you are teaching a grade one class. You are teaching the words “elephant, tiger, monkey, snake and zebra” using picture cards.

In today’s day and age, it is becoming a prerequisite for success to be able to speak good conversational English. It has become the worlds most widely-used language used for business. Because of this, there are MANY countries in search of those who are qualified and can effectively teach English as a second language.

Teaching in Asia - What to bring with you.

What do you pack? What can you leave behind? Well, it all depends on what country you are planning on teaching in. I personally have extensive knowledge about only 2 of the countries which make up Asia. Thailand and China. But I am sure that these 2 countries set the example for most countries in Asia that are taking in English Teachers. And believe me, these 2 countries are extremely different in EVERYTHING about them.
